DHAKA, BANGLADESH (GaeaTimes.com)- Bangladesh celebrated the International Ozone Day today with a colorful procession by the University of Dhaka students. The procession was inaugurated by the state minister for environment and forest Hasan Mahmud. By celebrating such a day, Bangladesh not only spreads awareness about the importance of the ozone layer and the problems of its depletion but also sets an example for all developing nations across the world. The procession began at the University of Dhaka’s Teacher Student Center at 8am and came to an end at the National Press Club. State minister Hasan Mahmud gave a speech where he urged the common people to come up with effective alternatives for daily necessities that are harmful to the environment. He also spoke about some of the initiatives taken by the government to save the environment in the recent years.

The theme for this year’s International Ozone Day in Bangladesh is ‘Good governance is essential to preserve the ozonosphere’. President Mohammad Zillur Rehman and the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have also delivered speeches to the common people in honor of the day.

September 16 was chosen as the International Ozone Day by the United Nations commemorating the day in 1987 on which the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete The Ozone Layer was signed. The Montreal Protocol was designed to protect the ozone layer by setting timetables that would control the production and usage of the ozone depleting substances and also restrict international trade in them. Considered one of the most effective environmental protocols ever implemented, the Montreal protocol has been signed by 196 countries across the world.
