ATLANTA (GaeaTimes.com)- On Monday the fight operations at the HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport hailed as the busiest airport of the world came to a halt owing to incessant snowfall and inclement weather. The airport is a big hub for airlines like AirTran Airways and Delta Air Lines. The airport that caters to nearly 88 million passengers per year was defeated by the rage of nature and the crew had to shut down the runways. The airport itself was not closed but a whopping 2,200 flights were taken off and this made things really tough for both international and domestic passengers. John Kennedy an airport spokesman said that hardly any flight took off owing to the severe snowfall. Apart from the flight disruption the snowstorm resulted in highway mishaps and school closures.

The Delta Airlines had to cancel more than 1900 flights on Monday which affected 35% of its flights. Even on Sunday night it had to cancel close to 500 flights. AirTran canceled more than 300 flights on Monday from Atlanta airport its biggest hub. The flight cancellations ran into Tuesday as well. The met office experts think that snowstorm and hostile weather will not change in the next few days. Since the planes are flying with maximum load factor the airlines may need a few days to reschedule the passengers of the canceled flights.

Anthony Black a spokesman for Delta Air Lines said that very few flights were operating from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport even on Tuesday. He added that the airline is offering phone cards and food vouchers to the passengers who have got stranded at the airport.
