Obama marks 20th anniversary of Disabilities Act
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama marked the 20th anniversary of a landmark law for people with disabilities by bolstering the government’s efforts to recruit and hire people with physical and mental limitations.
Obama signed an executive order that requires the federal personnel agency to develop model guidelines for hiring people with disabilities and provide assistance in doing so. Progress reports would also have to be posted on a website.
The executive order fulfills an Obama campaign promise.
The Americans with Disabilities Act became law on July 26, 1990, banning workplace discrimination against qualified people with disabilities, and requiring improved access to public places and transportation.
