US general in Afghan war to see Obama over remarks

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is preparing to hear his top war commander offer an explanation for the biting published complaints he made about his commander in chief and administration officials.

The showdown expected Wednesday at the White House, with Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s job in question, comes as the ramped-up war in Afghanistan stands at a precarious moment.

The White House rebuke of McChrystal suggests it will be hard for him to save his job.

Two military officials say McChrystal is prepared to submit his resignation. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly.

Obama is set to make an announcement on McChrystal’s future following their meeting.
