Job on line, general must explain remarks to Obama

WASHINGTON — The top commander in the Afghanistan war met with his Pentagon bosses to explain to his biting published complaints about the commander in chief and his aides.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal spent a half hour with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen on Wednesday morning — the first in a series of meetings he was summoned to after the article in Rolling Stone magazine.

Recalled from Afghanistan by President Barack Obama, the general was going to talk with Obama in the Oval Office before attending the president’s regular monthly war meeting, in which McChrystal usually participates by videoconference.
