China is victim of Internet pirates, minister says

PARIS — China’s foreign minister, whose country is accused of being a source of hackers, says the Chinese Internet is itself the victim of pirate attacks.

Yang Jiechi said Wednesday in Paris that China has a “completely open” Internet and welcomes foreign companies as long as they respect the rules and Chinese culture.

Yang was making an oblique reference to China’s dispute with Google Inc., which says its Chinese operation has been victimized by cyber attacks and censorship.

He said China “is the victim of pirate attacks” and the international community must fight the phenomenon together.

Chinese media have portrayed Google’s complaints as part of a U.S. government campaign of “information imperialism.”
