Chinese govt. helps suspect in NJ airport breach
NEWARK, N.J. — A New Jersey graduate student from China charged with breaching security at a New Jersey airport is getting legal help from the Chinese Consulate in New York.
Consular official Wang Bangfu (WONG’ BUNG’-fu) says the consulate has been closely following the case of 28-year-old Haisong Jiang (HY’-song JEE’-ong) since he was charged with trespassing Jan. 3.
Jiang entered a restricted area at Newark Liberty International Airport, where he was seeing his girlfriend off. That triggered the shutdown of a busy terminal and led to snarled flights worldwide.
Wang said Tuesday evening that the consulate is providing Jiang assistance. He isn’t providing details to protect Jiang’s privacy.
Jiang’s arraignment is set for Jan. 28 in Newark.
