Gates says US-Seoul alliance strong on North Korea
WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the US alliance with South Korea is probably stronger than ever at this time of transition for North Korea’s leadership.
A top North Korean official confirmed Friday to broadcaster APTN that Kim Jong Il’s youngest son — Kim Jong Un — will be the next head of the reclusive communist nation.
Gates says it remains to be seen whether there will be any change in the regime’s behavior. Gates spoke at a Pentagon press conference with his South Korean counterpart Kim Tae-young after the two had the latest in a series of bilateral meetings.
