Obama congratulates new Philippine president
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has congratulated Benigno Aquino III on becoming the newest president of the Philippines.
The Philippine Congress proclaimed Aquino president on Wednesday, formalizing his landslide victory in the country’s first national automated elections last month. He is the son of revered democracy icons Benigno Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon Aquino.
The White House says Obama and Aquino spoke by telephone Wednesday morning and that they look forward to meeting at a mutually convenient time.
