Obama praises peace efforts of Nigerian president

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says his thoughts and prayers are with the people of Nigeria as they mourn the loss of their president.

The president of Nigeria, Umaru Yar’Adua, died Wednesday after several months of health problems.

In a statement, Obama praised Yar’Adua’s work to promote peace and stability in Africa and within Nigeria’s own borders.

Yar’Adua had tried to peacefully end an insurgency in Nigeria’s oil-producing Niger Delta that had targeted the petroleum infrastructure, but those efforts frayed after he became ill.

Obama says Nigeria and the U.S. took steps to deepen their relationship under Yar’Adua’s leadership, and that work continues.
