Petraeus: Troop surge on track despite upheaval
WASHINGTON — Gen. David Petraeus says political upheaval in Kyrgyzstan hasn’t slowed the arrival of the reinforcements President Barack Obama ordered for the Afghanistan war.
Petraeus says that nearly 14,000 of the additional 30,000 U.S. forces are already there.
Military officials had to rearrange deployments over the last week because the U.S. temporarily stopped sending troops through Krygyzstan, where the U.S. leases a major transit hub. That country’s president was ousted last week.
Petraeus told a Washington audience on Tuesday that he’s on track to make his goal of having all but one unit in place by the end of August.
