Obama deplores violence in Kyrgyzstan

WASHINGTON — The White House says President Barack Obama is closely following the turmoil in Kyrgyzstan and calling for calm to be restored.

A statement issued by presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs says the United States deplores the violence on both sides of the conflict.

The president of Kyrgyzstan has fled the capital for the southern part of the country. Scores of people have been killed and wounded in the violent uprising.

The former foreign minister for Kyrgyzstan says she has taken control on an interim basis until new elections can be held in six months.
