Rev. Lowery cuts back on speaking during recovery
ATLANTA — The Rev. Joseph Lowery is taking a break from his busy speaking calendar as he continues to recover from a blood clot in his lung.
The civil rights icon was hospitalized for the condition last month.
His wife, Evelyn, says he is doing very well since his Feb. 13 release from an Atlanta hospital, but is not ready to return to speaking engagements. His appearances have been canceled for the next several weeks while he rests at home.
The 88-year-old Lowery worked alongside the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and is a co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He delivered the benediction at President Barack Obama’s inauguration last year. Several months later, Obama awarded Lowery the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
