Summary Box: 5 US airlines apply for Tokyo slots

WHAT HAPPENED: Four big U.S. carriers and one small carrier applied for slots to fly to Tokyo Haneda airport, which is desirable because it’s close to downtown. The carriers are Delta, American, United, Continental and Hawaiian.

WHY IT MATTERS: United and Delta already have a major presence at Tokyo’s Narita airport. Getting slots at Haneda would bolster their presence in Japan. American and Continental see a chance to expand their relatively small share of Asia flying.

WHO DECIDES: The U.S. Transportation Department is expected to dole out the slots between the U.S. and Haneda later this year.
