Obama thanks Dominican Republic’s leader for help

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has thanked the president of the Dominican Republic for that nation’s assistance to Americans leaving Haiti.

Obama placed the call to President Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic on Thursday night.

The White House says Obama expressed his appreciation for the role the Dominican Republic has played in facilitating the evacuation of U.S. citizens and in the flow of relief teams and supplies into Haiti through the Dominican Republic.

Fernandez shared with Obama his assessment of the situation in Haiti in the aftermath of Tuesday’s devastating earthquake. He had visited the capital of Port-au-Prince earlier Thursday.
