LONDON - A pair of 14-year-old school children have become Britain’s youngest parents.
April Webster, of Caerphilly, South Wales, who began having unprotected sex with the child’s father Nathan Fishbourne since September 2009, gave birth to son Jamie four weeks ago, The Sun reported Saturday.
The pair met when they were students of St. Cenydd school. While Nathan is still in the school, April has dropped out and now attends a “young mums” centre.
“Jamie wasn’t planned, but I’m going to be a great mum for him. He’s perfect and I’m going to give him everything he ever wants,” April said.
Though the child is living with April and her parents, Nathan said “I’d love to have him at weekends - and April can have him five days during the week.”
The teenagers are, however, confused over the state of their relationship. April said they are having a “cooling off period” and that she was unsure if their partnership will last.
“He has not turned his back on the baby but he’s asking to do things like have him stay over at his house and that has caused some arguments. We have a few things to sort out,” she said.
April did not tell her parents they were having sex because she was “too embarrassed”. Nathan had used a condom once but did not like it - and after that the youngsters took no precautions.
Jamie arrived Nov 15. Though he was born with a malformed oesophagus which hindered his feeding, after an operation he was declared healthy and allowed to go home.
Their parents were stunned when they learned of the pregnancy - but are now supportive of their children.
April’s mother Maria, 36, said: “It was a big shock at first but we let April make the decision on whether to go through with it. Now he has arrived we’re glad she did. He’s my first grandson and so beautiful.”
Her father, Jeff, a 38-year-old cabbie, said: “April’s still my little girl and now she’s got a little baby. She’s already doing so much for Jamie. We’re really proud at how she has taken to motherhood.”
Nathan’s father Ron, a retired trucker aged 53, said: “We weren’t happy because he’s so young. I had a real go at him and told him he had been stupid. But we can’t undo what has happened and will now accept Jamie into our family. There’s no way we’ll turn our backs on him.”
Nathan’s mother Julie, 43, added: “I was angry at first but now I’ve bought a cot, a baby seat, a stairgate - everything for a little baby.”
