NEW YORK (GaeaTimes.com)- Elaine Kaufman, the motherly woman who ran the New York bistro Elaine’s for 5 decades passed away on Friday. The 81-year-old breathed her last at the Lenox Hill Hospital. As the news of the restaurateur’s demise spread, several bloggers took to the web and spoke about their experiences at Elaine’s. The restaurant was known for hosting writers and other celebs. The obituaries by some of the well known writers and journalists on Elaine Kaufman indicate that the place was better known for the cozy ambiance and drinks and less for its food.

Enid Nemy, who wrote on the legendary restaurateur, called Elaine’s a writer’s room. She said that over the years, she went sporadically to Elaine’s and enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. She explained that Elaine Kaufman would often join the people at the tables and share the food. Known to be loyal to those who were loyal to her, Elaine Kaufman also had a special liking for Yankees and writers. She was also known to rule with an iron fist and often punished those who extended their stay at the tables by not providing tables on the next day. She was also known for ordering food on behalf of the guests but none of them seemed to mind.

In 2004, Elaine Kaufman was named a ‘living landmark’ and she also appeared in a number of films as herself. Most famously she made an appearance in Woody Allen’s ‘Manhattan’ and the Harrison Ford starrer ‘Morning Glory’. Woody Allen himself was known to be a patron of Elaine’s and several stories float that one might any time see the legendary American director walk-in while eating or drinking at the bistro.
