SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- Men all over America can tuck their razors away today as ‘No Shave November‘ begins. The trend that emerged in recent years has taken a more charitable turn this year with the focus being on male health. University students across the nation have taken the initiative for this year’s No Shave November more seriously than last year and Facebook has helped spread more awareness and garner better participation in the phenomenon.
Though the origins of this craze is unknown, some reports suggest that the trend started back in 2003 in Australia when the men were inspired by the women’s efforts towards breast cancer awareness. The word ‘movember’ was coined to give the month its identity and one survey reveals that as much as $42 million was raised in charity globally through it. According to one of the students who organized the event last year, this year the awareness and the expectation is more as Facebook has played a crucial role in spreading the awareness for No Shave November.
Students of Catholic University of America had participated in the event unofficially last year but this year the No Shave November has been added to the Campus Ministry’s Hunger and Homeless charity week. Organizer John Aby, who is also a student of the university, said that the idea of the event is to make the people donate out of tiredness of looking at the beards. The authorities handed out the charts to the university students on Sunday and at the end of the month there will also be prizes for the best and the worst beard.
