Egyptian newspaper defends doctored photo

CAIRO — A state-run newspaper has published a doctored photo showing Egypt’s president leading Mideast peace talks, and the editor-in-chief has defended the decision by saying it was meant to show Hosni Mubarak’s key role.

The original photo shows President Barack Obama front and center as he leads Mubarak and three other world leaders on the red carpet as the talks got under way Sept. 1 in Washington.

But Al-Ahram put Mubarak in the lead, with Obama slightly behind him to his right, in a photo published earlier this week.

Opposition activists have complained the photo is misleading.

Al-Ahram’s Editor-in Chief Osama Saraya lashed out at critics in an editorial Friday, saying the doctored photo was meant to illustrate Egypt’s leading role in the talks.
