WASHINGTON (GaeaTimes.com)- Following Wright County Egg, another Iowa based egg producing company, Hillandale Farms has voluntarily recalled some batches of its egg from the market fearing of salmonella outbreak. As national wide investigation into the outbreak is being carried out by the federal agency, Iowa’s Hillandale Farms on Friday announced its recall of more than 170 million eggs. The voluntary recall was done after laboratory test confirmed the presence of salmonella bacteria in the eggs of Hillandale Farms.
Although Hillandale Farms did not mention whether the recall was in any way connected with the Wright County Egg recall, the federal Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Pat El-Hinnawy maintained that the two recalls are related to each other. She added that the salmonella bacterium that is at the root of the present outbreak is the same that has been found in Hillandale Farms‘ eggs. It is salmonella enteritidis that is causing havoc in United States.
The latest recall by Hillandale Farms on Friday increased the total number of potential tainted eggs to around 550 million. The Wright County Egg had previously voluntarily recalled 380 million eggs from the market. The brands recalled by the Hillandale Farms are Sunny Farms, Hillandale Farms, Sunny Meadow, Wholesome Farms and West Creek. The company that supplies eggs to grocery distribution center and other food service companies located in about fourteen states have recalled eggs that were sold between April and August 2010. Eggs were supplied to states like California, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Arkansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin. The salmonella outbreak in United States has already sickened more than 1,000 people and the toll is being feared to rise in the coming weeks.
