NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The phenomenon is not anything new to the country and it has happened again. While the poor and needy in India have to do without two square meals a day, thousands of tonnes of food grains rot in the government godowns everyday. The Food Corporation of India may have been putting the blame on the government agencies in Punjab but it is the FCI itself which has com up with a solution to the problem.
However the solution that has been suggested by the Food Corporation of India seems to have shocked the government authorities. While the Indians are starving for want of food, the FCI has suggested that the large quantities of food grains which are stored inside the government godowns are to be exported to the neighboring countries of Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. According to reports in the media, this decision has been taken on the part of the Food Corporation of India authorities because the export of wheat to other countries at rates lower than that would have been charged during normal times, will in turn bring the much required money to the state and national government coffers.
Ashok Gulati, Director of the FCI made the announcement on behalf of the organization which is responsible for the procurement and storage of food grains in the country. He says that the government authorities are to charge Rs.11 per kg of food grains while selling them to the neighboring countries. India will soon be arranging a meeting with the External Affairs Ministries of both Nepal and Bangladesh to discuss details on the project. The Food Corporation of India also announced plans to distribute the grains to 150 poor districts in the country.
