Obama to hold forum with African youth in August

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will mark 50 years of independence by 17 sub-Saharan Africa countries at a forum next month in Washington attended by more than 100 young African leaders.

In announcing the event Aug. 3-5, the White House said Obama also will hold a town hall meeting with the group to discuss their vision for their societies over the next 50 years. The leaders will represent civil society and the private sector in more than 40 sub-Saharan Africa countries.

Seventeen of the countries will mark five decades of independence this year.

The forum also will include discussions on such topics as transparency and accountability, entrepreneurship, rights advocacy and empowering people and communities through technology.
