Calvin Coolidge, born July 4: Hero to tea partiers

PLYMOUTH, Vt. — In the Vermont hamlet where Calvin “Silent Cal” Coolidge was born, folks will celebrate his star-spangled birthday the way they always do.

They’ll gather at noon Sunday on the village green in Plymouth, Vt., where a state National Guard contingent and a color guard — trailed by hundreds of people — will walk down to Coolidge’s cemetery. A wreath provided by the White House will be placed at the gravesite of the much-maligned president.

A new museum is scheduled to open in Vermont and a symposium is planned to revisit his presidency as Coolidge’s back-to-basics government philosophy is making him a darling of tea partiers.

Coolidge is the only U.S. president born on the Fourth of July.
