Correction: China-US-Gates story
BEIJING — In a June 3 story about why China refused an offered visit by U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, The Associated Press erroneously reported the rank of Chinese military leader Ma Xiaotian. He is a general, not a lieutenant general. The same error was in a May 25 story from Beijing about a meeting between U.S. and Chinese military commanders.
