Obama to welcome Liberian president to White House
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will welcome Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to the White House on Thursday.
In a statement late Monday, the White House called Liberia is an “important democratic partner.” It said the African country has made “tremendous strides” in recent years.
Obama plans to discuss regional issues with Sirleaf.
Sirleaf is a 71-year-old Harvard University-trained economist. She became Africa’s first democratically elected female president in 2005. She’s credited with turning around a nation ravaged by civil wars for years until 2003.
The Liberian president says she will compete in the country’s 2011 election despite a campaign promise to only serve one term.
