Obama, Merkel chat about finance bill, Europe fund

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama called German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN’-geh-lah MEHR’-kuhl) to congratulate her on Berlin’s plan to contribute to a fund to stabilize the European economy.

The White House says Merkel offered her own congratulations on Senate’s passage of a financial overhaul bill that Obama has pushed.

A White House spokesman says the leaders also discussed Iran’s disputed nuclear program, and other issues in advance of the G-20 summit next month in Canada.

Obama called Merkel after he gave the graduation address Saturday at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
