Pentagon: US forces in SKorea not on high alert

WASHINGTON — The nation’s top military officer says U.S. forces in and around South Korea have not been placed on a higher level of alert since the sinking of a South Korean warship.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, says there’s been no change in the alert status for the U.S. after North Korea was blamed by South Korea for sinking one of its warships with a torpedo.

The United States supports the findings but has not said what, if anything, it will do about it.

The U.S. maintains more than 28,000 forces on the South Korean peninsula, and more aboard ships offshore.
