Karzai says it’s not up to him to fire his brother
WASHINGTON — Afghan President Hamid Karzai says President Barack Obama didn’t bring up the matter of Karzai’s notorious brother this week — but Karzai did so himself.
Karzai says no one asked him to fire Ahmad Wali Karzai, his wheeler-dealer half brother who has become a symbol of Afghan cronyism. Karzai’s brother is the main power-broker in Kandahar, the region where U.S. forces are expanding their counterinsurgency campaign this spring and summer.
Karzai told a Washington audience Thursday that it’s up to Afghanistan’s voters to decide the fate of his brother, who is the chairman of the local provincial council.
