Obama: Tensions with Karzai ’simply overstated’
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says any perception of tension between the U.S and Afghanistan is “simply overstated.”
Speaking at a White House news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai (HAH’-mihd KAR’-zeye), Obama said tension will always be present in a relationship as complicated and difficult as the one between the U.S. and Afghanistan.
Asked whether they discussed the tensions when they met Wednesday, Obama said “a lot of them were simply overstated.”
The Obama administration in the past has criticized Karzai for tolerating corruption and drug trafficking, while Karzai has accused Washington of not giving him the support he needs to govern.
