Karzai promises better Afghan government
WASHINGTON — Afghan President Hamid Karzai (HAH’-mihd KAR’-zeye) says Afghanistan still has its shortcomings, but he’s promising a better government there with help from the United States.
Speaking at the White House after meeting Wednesday with President Barack Obama, the Afghan leader also said he’d found Obama to be committed to reducing civilian casualties in Afghanistan — an issue that has put further strains on relations with the United States.
Over the past year, tensions have developed between Karzai’s government and the White House. The U.S. has criticized Karzai for tolerating corruption and drug trafficking. Karzai has said he’s not getting the support he needs from Washington, but Wednesday he thanked the U.S. for helping the Afghan people.
