Obamas head to North Carolina for quick vacation

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama and his family are heading to North Carolina for a short vacation.

The Obamas planned to escape the confines of the White House at midday Friday, flying south to Asheville, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.

The last time Obama was there he prepared for a debate and rallied supporters during the final month of his presidential campaign. He complained at the time that the golf courses looked great, but he didn’t have time to play.

He’s going to get that chance this weekend.

The family has no public plans in North Carolina, a state Obama barely won in 2008.

The president will speak at Sunday’s memorial in Beckley, W.Va., for the 29 lives lost April 5 in a West Virginia mine.
