Iran’s President Ahmadinejad: war games routine

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Iran’s leader says his country’s war games in the Persian Gulf are routine and there is no reason to worry.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was speaking to reporters during a state visit to Zimbabwe late Thursday, hours after his elite Revolutionary Guard began maneuvers in the Hormuz Strait, a strategic oil route.

In the past, the maneuvers have been held in the summer. There was no official explanation why they were brought forward this year, but they came as Iranian leaders were depicting U.S. President Barack Obama’s new nuclear policy as a threat.

In Harare, Ahmadinejad acknowledged the West was uncomfortable with the exercises. He says: “They don’t understand why we are doing so. But it is just an ordinary military exercise that we are currently undertaking.”
