Canada to send nuclear material to US

WASHINGTON — Canada plans to send its spent nuclear fuel back to the United States as part of a global effort to secure vulnerable nuclear material.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday the material from the Chalk River Laboratories in Ontario will be sent to the U.S. and converted into a form that is unusable in nuclear weapons.

Harper is attending a two-day nuclear summit hosted by President Barack Obama. Obama’s goal is to secure all loose nuclear materials worldwide within four years.
