Abortion ban will be on 2011 ballot in Miss.

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi is putting an abortion ban on the ballot in 2011.

Abortion opponents collected enough signatures to put the proposal on next year’s ballot. Voters will be asked to support whether unborn fetuses should be given human rights in the state’s constitution.

A similar proposal is going before Colorado voters this fall. If the proposals pass, opponents say they would conflict with a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion.

Mississippi already has one of the nation’s toughest abortion laws. It requires the consent of both parents for minors, a 24-hour waiting period and counseling before all abortions.
