Associated Press names Luis Alonso Lugo as Washington correspondent for Spanish service

AP names Luis Alonso to Spanish post in Washington
MEXICO CITY — Luis Alonso Lugo, a leader of The Associated Press’ Spanish-language service, has been named Spanish-language correspondent in Washington.
The appointment was announced Tuesday by Latin America Editor Niko Price.
“Luis has a deep and nuanced understanding of how events in Latin America affect decisions in Washington, and vice versa,” Price said. “Luis knows how to harness the AP’s unparalleled presence in Washington into a unique window into the American capital for our Spanish-language clients throughout the Americas.”
As a deputy Latin America editor for the past four years, Alonso has helped build a more competitive Spanish-language news report, and to bring images and words together into a multiformat news endeavor.
Alonso joined the AP in 2001 to help build its first Spanish-language multimedia team, and ran the Spanish Online service until late 2005.
He previously supervised StarMedia Network’s Spanish-language content. He was a political reporter and New York and Madrid correspondent for Diario El Nacional in Caracas, Venezuela, and Venezuela correspondent for the Spanish newspaper ABC.
Alonso, 40, of Caracas, holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and a master’s degree in journalism from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid.
