Calif. police say burned woman committed suicide

MONTEREY, Calif. — A woman found engulfed in flames on a Monterey sidewalk committed suicide, police said.

The woman, found Monday night by aghast neighbors and passers-by, was identified as 61-year-old Hilda Primativa Cordova, a native of Peru who lived alone in a nearby apartment.

Cordova died after dousing her body in rubbing alcohol and lighting it, Monterey police Lt. Leslie Sonne said.

Sonne said witnesses doused the flames with water before authorities arrived. Cordova died Tuesday night in the hospital.

Investigators did not know how long she had lived in Monterey. After a search of her apartment, police found no information about family or personal contacts.

Investigators are asking anyone who knew Cordova to contact Monterey police.
