Nigeria’s acting leader may meet Obama

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s former top diplomat says the West African nation’s acting leader may meet with President Barack Obama when he attends a summit on nuclear proliferation in Washington next month.

Former foreign affairs minister Ojo Maduekwe says acting President Goodluck Jonathan’s U.S. visit will be his first official foreign trip since taking over the country’s highest office more than a month ago.

Maduekwe was speaking to journalists Monday as he handed over his position to the ministry’s top bureaucrat. He is a member of the Cabinet that Jonathan dissolved last week, in his first major move as acting president.

Nigeria is one of the top crude oil exporters to the U.S., which closely follows political developments in the West African nation.
