US fashion designers pick McQueen for NYC honor

NEW YORK — The fashion world will pay one more tribute to late designer Alexander McQueen when the Council of Fashion Designers of America holds its annual awards ceremony in New York City in June.

McQueen died in an apparent suicide in London last month.

The CFDA announced McQueen’s special board of directors honor on Wednesday as it also named the nominees for best designer of womenswear, menswear and accessories.

Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and last year’s pick for up-and-coming talent, Alexander Wang, will compete in the womenswear category, considered the big prize of the night.

The emerging talent nominees this year are Joseph Altuzarra, Prabal Gurung (praw-BAHL’ GUHR’-rung) and Jason Wu.

Michael Kors will get the lifetime achievement award.
