Spain takes in first Guantanamo inmate
MADRID — The defense minister says Spain has taken in its first inmate from the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.
Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba says the man arrived early Wednesday and is one of five the Spanish government has said it will take from the U.S. naval base where terror suspects are held.
Perez Rubalcaba told reporters at Parliament the man is Palestinian, but would not give his name or other details, citing privacy concerns.
The minister said the Palestinian met a key condition, which is that he not have charges pending in the United States or Europe.
The Palestinian will be able to work in Spain and move around the country freely, but cannot leave it, the minister said.
