Britons hail record lottery with a bacon sandwich

LONDON — Britain’s richest-ever lottery winners say they celebrated their 56 million pound ($88 million) jackpot in modest style — with breakfast in a grocery store.

Nigel Page, a 43-year-old janitor, said Monday that he, his partner and their children ate bacon sandwiches at a Waitrose superstore to take in the news.

Page won half a jackpot worth 112 million ($175 million) pounds in Friday’s EuroMillions lottery draw, which is open to players across Europe.

The second winning ticket was bought in Spain, but the winner has not been named.

In May, an unnamed Spanish winner claimed euro126 million ($187 million), the largest-ever EuroMillions jackpot.

Page says he heard the news early Saturday after logging in to his online lottery account.
