Gunmen attack ex-Pakistani minister, kill 2 aides

ISLAMABAD — Police say gunmen have attacked a vehicle carrying a former Pakistani government minister just outside the capital, killing at least two of his aides.

Police official Altaf Ahmad says Monday’s attack targeting former Information Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad occurred in the garrison town of Rawalpindi, which borders Islamabad.

Ahmad’s spokesman, Javed Qureshi, said the former minister was wounded in the leg, but it was not clear whether he was shot or injured himself as he fell out of the vehicle.

Qureshi says Ahmad was campaigning for a vacant parliamentary seat shortly before he was attacked.

Ahmad served as information minister under former President Pervez Musharraf but lost his seat in an election held in early 2008.
