Dignitaries gather for Biden’s mother’s funeral

WILMINGTON, Del. — Hundreds of people are gathering in Delaware to pay their respects to Vice President Joe Biden’s mother.

The 92-year-old Jean Finnegan Biden died Friday after a brief illness. A crowd of about 700 people gathered Tuesday in the sanctuary at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Wilmington for a funeral Mass.

Those attending include President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton and several Cabinet officials and members of Congress.

The president and first lady met privately with the Biden family before the funeral began.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — A host of dignitaries are among the guests expected to attend the Delaware funeral for Jean Finnegan Biden, mother of Vice President Joe Biden.

The guest list for Tuesday’s funeral Mass at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Wilmington includes President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton, and about a dozen Cabinet officials.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Sens. Chris Dodd and Arlen Specter, and other members of Congress also are expected to attend.

Jean Biden died Friday at age 92 after falling ill in recent days. She broke her hip in a fall in March 2009.
