KULLU - Landslides caused by snowfall and persistent rains have made road transportation difficult and dangerous in the Kullu- Manali region.
Landslides at Raison, Dobhi, Alu Ground, Rangri and Manali have disrupted vehicular traffic movement.
Sher Singh Bobh, a teacher, who had a narrow escape on Friday when a rock almost hit his car near Manali said: “When I was on my way to school, I didn’t expect a landslide but suddenly a huge rock almost hit my car. It fell rapidly and disappeared after cutting my way.”
” This is third time that I narrowly escaped,” he added.
Farmers in the area are also facing losses as the water absorption capacity of the land has reached its peak due to which the terrace fields of Kullu are collapsing gradually and apple trees are getting uprooted.
Krishan Thakur, a farmer in Gadherni village said: ” The worse thing is that all the uprooted trees were more than 20 years old. Apple trees start bearing fruit after the age of 10 years which needs lots of hard work.”
He said apple growers were habitual of trees falling with the weight of heavy snow in winters but now the trees were falling due to excessive moisture in the soil. (ANI)
