LONDON - When the Browns were packing up to leave Downing Street, they were presented with a bill for 200 breakfasts.
In what became famous as the ‘Battle of the Breakfasts’ a refusal by Sarah Brown to bring her husband Gordon Brown morning snacks when he was in his Downing Street study left the couple with the bill, reports the Scotsman.
Ahead of the publication of her memoirs on life at Number 10, Sarah Brown said: “Gordon used to start work very early and one morning I got a call from his office saying: ‘Gordon has been down for an hour now. Have you got his breakfast ready?’ I said no, I certainly did not.
“He was at work! If he was up here, fine, he could have breakfast, but when he was at work he was on his own.
“There was a pause, then I was told, ‘Oh don’t worry, we will sort something else out’. I thought ‘too right’ and that was that.”
However, on departure they were presented with a bill for 200 breakfasts.
“We were charged for every rasher of bacon he’d ever had,” she said. (ANI)
