Ferguson eyeing Rooney ‘burst’ ahead of important Premier League games

LONDON - Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has urged striker Wayne Rooney to use his ’scissor-kick’ goal, an overhead kick he hit in the derby against Manchester City last week, as his Premier League season’s launchpad.
Rooney has been plagued by a bout of indifferent form this season, and has just six goals to his credit.
“Until last year he used to go on these scoring bursts, but last season he was more consistent in terms of goals. I’d be happy for him to go on a burst now as we’ve got some important games coming up,” the Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying. We could have Chelsea on March 1, providing neither of our FA Cup ties need a replay,” he added.
Ferguson had earlier declared it as the greatest goal he had ever seen at Old Trafford, and compared it to the great Denis Law’s legendary strikes for the club.
“I don’t think I’ve seen a better one here at Old Trafford. Rooney hit that volley against Newcastle six years ago with the same ferocity. We’ve had some classic goals here but in terms of execution, you’ll never see anything like that,” Ferguson had said.
“It was reminiscent of Denis Law although I’m not so sure that Denis ever put them in with such ferocity,” he added. (ANI)
