TOKYO, JAPAN (GaeaTimes.com)- Godzilla is an iconic monster character that is well known among the lovers of sci-fi flicks. A lot of movies have been made on this monster and they have spawned a number of sequels and remakes over the years as well. In a lot of Godzilla movies, the viewers see the monster wrecking havoc with public life and crushing vehicles with its teeth and jaws. The latest developments indicate that the makers of Godzilla want to crush a popular Japanese car maker in court. Toho Co., which is the owner of the copyright of Godzilla has taken Honda, the popular car maker to court for allegedly using the iconic character in one of its commercials without taking permission. The ad which has prompted the company to take the legal route is for the Odyssey minivan. The report says that after the Godzilla ad was used by Honda, the sales of the car have increased by 42 percent.
While Toho does have a point for the filing the lawsuit, it must be noted that it is very aggressive about protecting the copyright. Earlier it dragged companies making toys and fast food for the same reason. In the Honda ad that is at the centre of the discord, the monster Godzilla is shown for a split second but that is enough to leave Toho enraged.
The Honda Godzilla commercial that triggered lawsuit against the company is now available on the Internet. Honda is yet to react to the lawsuit and it is expected that the lawyers for the carmaker will retort to the developments in the near future.
