Brits spend more on wine than the French

LONDON - Britons buy more wine than the French and drank nearly two billion bottles in 2010.
Wine consumption in UK rose by 1.1 per cent in 2010 to 1.765 billion bottles, making Britain the world’s largest wine importer, reports the Daily Express.
Total sales reached 8.642 billion pounds-more than France-with consumption rising by 6.6 per cent since 2005.
According to figures since 2005 compiled by International Wine and Spirit Research, white wine is still Britons’ tipple of choice, accounting for 44 per cent of consumption.
Meanwhile, red wine sales fell by 7.7 per cent over the same period, but fizzy wines and champagne, are up by 16.1 per cent.
Vodka is the nation’s favourite spirit, but sales of tequila shot up 33 per cent, while bourbon consumption is expected to double by 2014. (ANI)
