PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO (GaeaTimes.com)- November 19 is celebrated as International Men’s Day across the world. While the Women’s Day receives huge media attention and even the build up to the day is well documented, the Men’s Day, every year, passes on unnoticed and somewhat unknowingly. Similar to most years, this year too the Men’s day has failed to generate enough media attention.

This year the focus of Men’s Day has been men’s health which has been a cause of concern after the recent statistics indicated that the life expectancy of males was 6 years lesser than that of females. There are several other male related issues apart from health that will be highlighted in the celebrations that take place in countries throughout the world. Though there are no specific celebrations of the event, some countries organize marches, debates, discussions and various other programs to highlight the contribution of men in the society. Among some of the countries that participate in the event there is Australia and Jamaica. India, USA and UK have recently marking the day as Men’s Day and it is certain that over the years the celebrations and the significance of the day will increase. The International Men’s Day was declared to be November 19 in 1999 and since then the UNESCO has supported the events that take place in the various countries.

Some of the points that will be focused on during this year’s celebration of International Men’s Day include positive contribution to society and the spreading of awareness about the discrimination against men.
