WHITEFISH POINT (GaeaTimes.com)- Ore freighter Edmund Fitzgerald which sank in Lake Superior owing to a vicious storm was remembered in an annual memorial service that took place at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point. Although the mighty ore carrier appeared to be invincible due to its gigantic size, it was no match to the vicious gale that wrecked a havoc in the lake way back on November 10, 1975. The ore freighter was lost in the Canadian waters more than three decades ago and it gradually transformed into the greatest mysteries of the 20th century as the reason which led to its sinking continues to remain unknown.

A two-hour ceremony was held on Wednesday evening at a distance of 300 yards from the old Great Lakes Engineering Works where the ore carrier was manufactured. Most of the surviving family members of the crews who lost their lives in the accident, attended the memorial service and tossed wreaths into the rivers in memory of the victims of the tragic incident that sank Edmund Fitzgerald. With the aim of honoring the crew, a bell was rung 29 times to remember all the 29 crew members while the name of each of the mariner was cited by someone in the audience.

The memorial service in memory of Edmund Fitzgerald was the perfect platform for the surviving family members of the crews who spend the evening remembering their loved ones and sharing stories about them and the mighty ore carrier. The distinguished people who spoke at the event included people who had built Edmund Fitzgerald, looked for it after it sank and explored the wreck years later.
