Wear Purple Oct 20: A GLAAD Initiative

NEW YORK (GaeaTimes.com)- Today is being held as a special day for those victims of homophobic bullies who lost their lives after incessant torture and humiliation by the peers or classmates. The number of gay and lesbian teenagers who have been led to end their lives tragically after bullying is rising with time. September in particular proved to be a harrowing month for those ill fated gay and lesbian teenagers since more than 6 teens were led to kill themselves. GLAAD which denotes Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has come up with its unique Wear purple initiative on Oct 20th. It has asked the people who agree with cause to wear purple colored dress on the day to show their support and solidarity for those teens. GLAAD functions as a media monitoring entity and tries to prevent media defamation of the LGBT community. The entity is naming the day as Spirit Day.
For those who stand by the queer community but stay on-line mostly there is an option. They can also join the Wear purple initiative on Oct 20. They can make their pages in social networking site Facebook and micro blogging site Twitter purple to show their support. Ironical as it may seem the attacks on homosexual teens continue unabated even in an age when a number of countries are accepting and legalizing same sex relations.
The Wear purple initiative on Oct 20 may help in building mass awareness about the crimes committed on the queer community. Many people still remember the sad case of Tyler Clementi a 18 year old student studying in Rutgers University. The entity has made it clear that anyone who believes in the concept of same sex love and relation can be a part of this initiative.
